Jumps Coach: USATF Level 1 Certified
As a student of track and field, Mateo began his career in 1989, competing in the standing broad jump and high jump as a 6th grade student at the now defunct Corbett Elementary School, in Tucson, Arizona. Developing a love for the jumps, and the high jump in particular, Mateo went on to graduate from the School of Scissor Stepping and enrolled in Fosbury Flop University while in Middle School. Taking this new skill set, and multiple wins with him, Mateo attended University High School and competed as a High Jump Specialist for the Rincon High School Track Team from 1993-1996. During that time, Mateo earned numerous awards, and broke the Arizona USATF Intermediate Boys High Jump Record, and the Rincon/University High School High Jump Record with a jump of 2.04m (6'8.5") and 2.08m (6'10") respectively. At the time of this writing (March 2013) both records were still current. On an athletic scholarship to Central Arizona College, Mateo finished his time there as the No. 5 High Jumper on the CAC Men's All Time Top Ten List with a jump of 2.14m (7'0.5") , and placed 2nd in the 1998 NJCAA National Championships. He currently has developed an enjoyment for distance running, and can be found participating in a 5k, marathon, or anything in between in a city or country near you.
